CBC Marketplace Investigates Homeopathy: A Review

Benefiting from the Atlantic Time Zone, I got to be one of the first to watch CBC Marketplace on Friday night (darn you, Newfoundland!) where they covered the topic of homeopathy. Here are my impressions. First, I want to praise Marketplace for not offering false balance on the issue. Homeopathy is not something about which [...] Related posts:

Irony and Homeopathy. #ten23 vs #homeopathy

I have indexed all the tweets on the #ten23 and #homeopathy hashtags
on twitter for the last 2 months, scoring them for ironic content and
belief in homeopathy. As you can see from the above plot there is a
significant negative correlation (CC=-0.0125) between believing in
homeopathy and an ability to appreciate irony. Thus, I have conclusively proved all homeopaths are incapable of
appreciating irony.

Homeopathy follow-up: Reactions in the wake of CBC Marketplace coverage

Earlier in January, CBC Marketplace investigated homeopathy. Now that there has been some time for people to react, here is a summary of some coverage around the Internet. Please also feel free to share relevant links in the comments. World Homeopathy Awareness Week 2011

Another year, another week to be made aware of homeopathy. This year’s theme is musculoskeletal well-being. The website is relatively unclear about their mission this year, but they do helpfully provide contact information for different countries that are involved in WHAW 2011. Their Canadian contacts are: Martine Jourde & Mathieu Bourbonnais S.P.H.Q. (Syndicat Professionnel des [...] Related posts:

Habs and Homeopathy

A few weeks ago I talked about a strange hockey-skepticism convergence on Radio Freethinker. That convergence of course is about the goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens in particular. Homeopathy kills

It still amazes me that the sham called “homeopathy” has any foothold in the medical market. Homeopathy has been shown to be bullshit, being nothing more than a placebo. Homeopathy “treatments” can stop or delay people from seeking real treatment, see What’s The Harm. Homeopathy endorsements from oafs such as Prince Charles contribute to the [...] Related posts:

The CBC recently aired a “Marketplace” programme on homeopathy. By all (credible!) accounts it was a very good piece of investigation and exposé of homeopathy. Boiron Settles for $12M to Stop Homeopathy Lawsuits

I have long contended that homeopathy does so well because people do not know what it is. Homeopathy thrives on the esoteric nature of its beliefs: tell customers one thing, but believe something weird within the cult. Indeed, last week I was at dinner with French friends where the subject of homeopathy came up. (It’s huge [...]

It's a Kinda Magic

It’s that time of year again or is it that time of month -  fortnight?

It does seem like every other week is Homeopathy Awareness Week and this is one of them.  So what can I do to bring awareness to Homeopathy?

I think it’s best to start with answering some basic questions with some helpful links:

“what is homeopathy?”

“How does Homeopathy work?”

“Should you use homeopathy?”

“Does homeopathy offer a real alternative choice?”

House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee decided to evaluate the evidence for homeopathy and published their

Little Sugar Pills – Why Fall For Homeopathy?

My good friend Kylie Sturgess has teamed up with Matt Rogers and Milton Mermikides to produce this pretty excellent video about why people believe in the alternative medicine of homeopathy.

There’s a variety of reasons why someone might believe in homeopathy.Homeopathy isn’t as powerful as its supporters claim it is – the power of the human mind is greater. Which is why we have to use our minds, when it comes to getting the message out. There’s more to stopping homeopathy than taking an overdose [...]

Homeopathy cures and prevents malaria and HIV…what?

Jeremy Sherr’s clinics promoting homeopathy in Africa is, as Quackometer puts it, murderous. What follows is a critique of the essay Homeopathy Works — and the Skeptics Can’t Stand It! by Robert Medhurst of Brauer Natural Medicine (2010) .  I choose this essay, because at face value its reasonably articulate, and convincing, at least to the untrained eye.

Homeopathy in bad weather

As a result of recent findings that concluded homeopathy is nothing more than wishful thinking, otherwise known as placebo, Steven Novella reports:

Homeopathy is on the ropes in the UK. Earlier in the year The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee (STC) released a report, Evidence Check 2: Homeopathy, essentially saying that homeopathy is bunk and should no longer be supported. Recently representatives of the British Medical Association (BMA)

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
